A 13-year-old girl died from injuries sustained in a school bus accident

A 13-year-old girl who was injured in a school bus accident on Tuesday afternoon has died from her injuries, according to the RCMP.

The girl was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the accident on Woodlawn Road in Dorchester.

She died at the hospital on Wednesday, said Kp. Hans Wellett, RCMP spokesman.

The RCMP has answered several questions and says they will not explain what happened.

Ouellette said police did not suspect “crime was a factor in the girl’s death.”

“With that in mind, we cannot comment on more details about the incident to protect the privacy of those involved,” Wellett said.

School officials also said little about the incident.

In a letter to parents, school principal June Leger said the district had no further information on what had happened.

When asked for an update Thursday, a school district spokesman said there would be no further comments.

“Following the RCMP’s investigation into the incident, no further action has been taken,” Stephanie Patterson said in an email statement. “In the interest of respecting the privacy of those affected, we cannot comment further.”

She said Dorchester Consolidated School will remain open Thursday for students and staff who want to meet with members of the education support team. Parent-teacher meetings have been canceled.

Ouellette made additional inquiries to the Anglophone East and to the coroner’s offices.

The Coroner’s Office is investigating

A spokesman for the coroner said they were investigating the incident.

As this is an active investigation, Jeffrey Downey said he could not comment further.

Robert Corkerton’s children were traveling on the same school bus as the deceased girl, but were not on the bus Tuesday afternoon.

Details of the incident will have to be considered eventually, but now is not the time, said Corkerton, who is chairman of the parent school’s support committee and a member of Dorchester’s village council.

He said the focus now should be on caring for students.

“As the parent of a child on this bus, I’m not worried about the details right now,” said Corkerton, whose son was a classmate of the deceased girl. “I think more about our family, our community. This is where I’m interested.”

On Twitter on Thursday afternoon, local MLA Megan Mitton said: “It is hard on her heart to learn that the little girl has died … My sincere condolences to her family and the community of the consolidated schools in Dorchester. I know this is a difficult time for the whole Dorchester community. “
