It says at least three officers were injured and forced to act after stones were thrown at the Western Wall, a nearby Jewish holy site.
Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum described the violence as “brutal attacks by Israeli occupying forces on worshipers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque”.
The Palestinians see any major police deployment in Al-Aqsa as a major provocation.
The mosque is the third holiest site in Islam and was built on top of a hill, which is the holiest site for the Jews, who call it the Temple Mount.
This has been a major hotbed of Israeli-Palestinian violence for decades. Clashes there last year sparked an 11-day war with extremists in the Gaza Strip.
Easter, Ramadan and Easter coincide this year, and millions of Jews, Muslims and Christians are expected in Jerusalem in the next few days.
In late March and early April, Israel suffered one of the worst waves of attacks in years.
In four separate incidents, 14 Israelis were killed and dozens injured.
Sky News correspondent for the Middle East Alistair Bunkal said the latest attacks were carried out by a mix of Palestinians, Arab-Israelis and Bedouins.
