President Joe Biden was left empty-handed after addressing the University of North Carolina on Thursday.
Biden, 79, had just finished delivering a nearly 40-minute speech at the North Carolina State University of Agriculture and Technology in Greensboro when he turned to the right with his outstretched paw in a handshake.
No one else was on stage, and none of the applauding crowd approached the president to exchange courtesies, according to event footage.
The Democrat pressed a little flesh at the beginning of the speech, shaking hands with Malcolm Hawkins, the electrical engineering student who introduced him.
His remarks focused on pressure from Congress to increase funding for semiconductor manufacturing, as proposed in the Bipartisan Innovation Act.
Some political opponents have reacted to the unfavorable turnout, including Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who is tweeting eye-rolling emojis along with footage from the aerial handshake.
