Edinburgh bypass: Drivers annoyed after “five hours” delays due to trailer fire

Edinburgh drivers were reportedly queued up to five hours after an earlier fire on the A720.

Earlier this afternoon, April 14, a busy Edinburgh bypass was closed to both the west and east at Baberton after a truck trailer caught fire near the Calder junction when dramatic images of the fire surfaced.

Pictures from the scene show huge clouds of black smoke rising in the air, with police in Scotland even warning nearby residents of Wester Hales and Sethyl to close their windows.

Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties, but the route to the west remained closed tonight, causing outrage and delays among travelers.

Traffic Scotland, which tracks delays and accidents across the country, tweets live updates to inform drivers who may be in the area, with the latter arriving at 5:30 p.m., informing passengers of a potential 80-minute delay.

They tweeted: “UPDATE: A720 Westbound – Baberton closed, travel time of about 80 minutes from Gilmerton.

“The eastern movement is completely open. The road to the west remains closed on the bypass road. Avoid, as there are long delays.

The tweet was met with answers from several drivers who waited for hours because of the queues, as uncertainty about the exact duration of the delays continues.

One user said: “We’ve been stuck in this for five hours. These duplicate identical updates are not acceptable. What is actually being done to open the way? Are vulnerable people in vehicles being considered? ”

Another replied angrily, “Why the hell are you telling people it was 90 minutes late? I’ve been stuck in this nasty show for three and a half hours.”

One added: “The truck is on its way to Calder, so why not reopen the bypass and allow all the traffic to move?” It may then be closed tonight for restoration and any necessary road repairs. “
