Natural gas from the plant raises concerns, the evacuation is underway

Concerns about the retention of natural gas in the air have prompted the evacuation of those living at least a mile and a half from the plant. K-96 will remain closed.

Firefighters at the scene of the fire at the Tenewa gas station just outside Haven left the scene, fearing that there could be another explosion of natural gas. Authorities say an evacuation is possible.

Haven, Cannes. (CAKE) – According to Adam Weishaar, director of emergency management for Reno County, around 1:17 pm on Thursday, many units were sent to Kent Road to signal a fire in a gas plant.

When the crews arrived on the scene, they were greeted with heavy smoke and flames. The crews also reported explosions.

Fire crews are still working at the scene. The teams are expected to be on site in a few hours.

People within two miles of the plant were evacuated.

Firefighters from Colwich, Mount Hope, Burton, Macpherson and Wichita also responded. A foam tender is also delivered on site.

Two people were transported by BMP with minor injuries, all workers at the plant were reported.

Weishaar said the Reno County Commission had signed a local disaster declaration to allow state resources to come and help put out the blaze.

The gas to the plant has been stopped. Weisshar says there is no risk to the pubic area at the moment. K-96 will be stopped for several hours to allow firefighters to transport water to the fire.

Haven, Cannes. (KAKE) – KAKE News has a team heading to the scene of a major fire at the Haven Midstream gas processing plant.

The call was sent around 1:30 p.m. Many crews were fighting the fire.

K-96 will be temporarily closed between Yoder and Haven.

It is mandatory that people do not enter the area.

Haven Midstream absorbs natural gas and lowers the temperature to sub-zero temperatures to separate liquids from natural gas – ethane, butane, propane and natural gasoline – from methane, the main constituent of natural gas.

This is an evolving story and KAKE will provide you with the latest when the information becomes available.
