Outdoor fires are prohibited in Ottawa

The Ottawa Fire Department is enforcing a city-wide fire ban that takes effect immediately.

All open fires, even in properties with open fire permits, are banned, the fire department said on Friday. The ban applies to agricultural burns, pile burns, campfires and outdoor wood-burning fireplaces.

Devices that do not need a permit (fireplaces and barbecues of propane, ethanol and natural gas) are not included.

The fire department enforced the ban due to environmental conditions, including a large volume of dry vegetation, which “increases the risks and can quickly lead to rapid and uncontrolled spread of fire,” the press release said.

“This ban will remain in force until conditions improve and green grass begins to be seen through the tall dead grass,” the statement said.

The fire service also recommends keeping combustible materials away from buildings and propane tanks, ensuring that propane tanks are at least three meters from buildings, storing piles of wood at a safe distance from homes and making sure cigarettes are safely disposed of. .
