Police officers outside the New Jersey service can smoke weed without being fired

The boys in blue are free to smoke some green in Garden State.

According to incumbent Attorney General Matthew Platkin, police officers outside the New Jersey service are allowed to inflate the state’s legal weed without facing discipline.

Platkin sent a note to police chiefs on Wednesday detailing the policy – which allows employees aged 21 and over to consume cannabis in all forms while out of work – a week before the recreation pot goes on the shelves in the state. according to the note.

“[Police departments] cannot take any adverse action against employees because they use or do not use cannabis outside of their official duties, “the note said, as a reminder of compliance with the Cannabis Regulation Act, supporting the implementation and modernization of the market signed by Governor Phil Murphy.

The note adds that a urine test contaminated with weeds is not a reason to fire a cop.

“An employee should not be subject to any adverse action by the employer solely because of the presence of cannabinoid metabolites in the employee’s body fluid,” it said.

New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin has issued a note stating that a urine test that is positive for marijuana is not a reason to fire a police officer. AP

In contrast, New York City police officers said they did not want their officers to go up – banning marijuana use by off-duty officers, despite the drug legalization at Empire State last year.

“With regard to the recently enacted state legislation that legalizes the use of marijuana for entertainment, uniformed and civilian members of the service are reminded that the use of marijuana is still strictly prohibited,” said a note sent by the commanding officer of the medical department of NYPD last April.

In March 2021, then-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Marijuana Regulatory and Taxation Act, which allows adults 21 and older to shine.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is regulating, helping enforce and modernizing the cannabis market in law, and marijuana is expected to go on sale in stores next week. AP

The law also prohibits New York employers from discriminating against workers for using weed outside of work – although this provision may not apply to all government officials, such as law enforcement officials.

“All existing patrol guidance procedures on the ban, as well as drug screening procedures, remain in place. Members are reminded that they must be fit for work at all times, “the note said.

Voters in New Jersey have approved a constitutional amendment allowing the sale of cannabis for entertainment to people aged 21 and over in November 2020. Store sales are set to begin on April 21.
