An animal health control zone order has been introduced in the province to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza or HPAI. The order of the Chief Veterinary Director of Saskatchewan came into force on Thursday and lasts until May 14. The situation will then be reassessed.
The order prohibits the movement and participation of birds in exhibitions, auctions and agricultural fairs. This also applies to other events where the birds will be collected from different places.
HPAI was unveiled in a number of provinces this year. This includes outbreaks of poultry in Alberta and Ontario. The first case in Saskatchewan was reported in a snow goose on April 8. The Saskatchewan case was the first appearance of HPAI in the province in 15 years.
Poultry producers and small flock owners are reminded to follow biosecurity protocols to protect their flocks from disease. This includes keeping wild birds away from flocks, as well as food and water supplies, restricting visitors and monitoring bird health. Those with small flocks are encouraged to keep birds indoors during wild bird migration, if possible.
