A 27-year-old man from Brampton faces multiple criminal charges after a grandmother said she was held with a gun while driving her grandchildren into town earlier this week.
Peel Regional Police says a woman drove her two grandchildren, ages 7 and 8, to Rathmore Street and Culderstone Road in Brampton at 8:10 p.m. on Wednesday.
A suspect carrying a compact black pistol approached her while she was parked and allegedly aimed his pistol at her, demanding her belongings.
He then allegedly ordered her to get out of the vehicle, but she refused and started driving instead.
“The victim eventually managed to escape from the suspect and was connected to the police,” police said on Friday.
No one was injured in the collision and nothing was taken.
Police identified the suspect the next day, and at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, they searched a home in Brampton.
They arrested a man they identified as Ibrahim Ahmed Abdi.
It is alleged that a .40 caliber Taurus pistol was found at the scene.
Abdi was charged with crimes, including three counts of forced detention, robbery, aiming a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm and failure to comply with a release order.
He appeared in court in Brampton for a bail hearing.
Investigators are asking anyone who has a control camera or other surveillance footage in the Rathmore Street and Calderstone Road area between 7pm and 10pm on Wednesday to contact them.
