Coronavirus update for Oakville from April 16, 2022

This is the Oakville coronavirus update for Saturday, April 16, 2022, with news of last week’s COVID-19. This week, now 27 months after the pandemic, cumulative global cases have surpassed 500 million people.

More than 95% of all doses given at Halton last week were boosters, meaning it was the third or fourth dose. Fourth doses (second booster doses) of the vaccine are now available to anyone over the age of 60 in Halton and to selected other groups.

There were two new reported deaths in Oakville this week and two more in other parts of Halton. The number of hospitalizations in the region with COVID-19 is slightly declining this week, interrupting the growing number of admissions for almost a month.

In the most extreme case, there were 18 second doses administered to Halton on the same day as 2,335 boosters were given – this is 99.24% of all boosters administered. This means that unless there is a drastic increase in the number of new people being vaccinated, neither Oakville nor Halton will ever reach the province’s target of 90% immunization among eligible people. (Oakville is currently 86% fully vaccinated for eligible people.)

With Ontario active by more than 20 percent for the third week in a row, the provincial government is considering a break in the next phase of repealing health protocols for COVID-19, including extending mandatory mask wearing in hospitals, long-term care and public transportation. The active cases exceed a total of 36,000.

To date, the number of cases in Canada has reached 3.6 million, and hospitalizations in Canada have increased by more than 1,000 over the past week. The United States has more than 80 million cumulative cases, with active cases rising again in major cities and a total death toll approaching one million.

Since the Halton region last revised its COVID-19 reporting website, much less information is provided on a daily basis as the local number of cases decreases. Regional data no longer report the number of cured or active cases of COVID-19.

Fully vaccinated passengers, regardless of nationality, no longer need a negative COVID-19 test result to enter the country. Although tests for fully vaccinated passengers (or those under 4 years of age) are no longer required, proof of vaccination is still required for all air, train and cruise ship journeys arriving in or within the country.

** Vaccine reservation: Fourth doses (second booster doses) of the vaccine are now available to everyone in Halton aged 60 and over, as well as to all indigenous peoples and those in their household aged 18 and over.

Halton continues to reserve first and second dose vaccinations for all residents aged five and over, plus a third booster dose for all adults aged 18 and over.

First, second and third doses for those 12 years and older are offered on a visit-to-region basis. All vaccines approved for use in Canada effectively protect you from COVID-19 and all known variants of concern.

Pictured right is a chart from the Halton region showing how dramatic your risk of getting sick or being hospitalized when you are vaccinated is.
