The driver was pronounced dead at the scene in Cowley County, and the three deputies were taken to hospital, where they are expected to recover, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a press release.
The exchange of gunfire came after the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 around 11:45 a.m. Friday, reporting a “suspicious” black Jeep Liberty in the area, KBI reported.
When police found the car, the driver refused to leave the car at their request.
“When they tried to get her out of the jeep, the woman pulled out a gun and an exchange of gunfire took place,” KBI officials said in a press release. The driver died in the shooting.
The driver’s name was not released pending the family’s announcement of the death.
KBI said it would conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.
Cowley County is about 50 miles south of Wichita, Kansas.
