Gov. Katie Hochul on Thursday criticized Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for “smiling” as he signed a law banning abortions in his state for 15 weeks.
“Smiling from ear to ear while taking away the reproductive rights of Florida residents. This is cruel and despised, “Hochul tweeted in response to a post including footage from the signing of the bill.
“Anyone seeking abortion care should know that you are welcome in New York,” Hochul said.
Some commentators have questioned Hochul’s wording in her fiery response.
“Interesting choice of words, ‘tears’ while talking about abortion, government,” one Twitter user wrote.
Florida’s new law, which will take effect on July 1, will ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, a dramatic reduction from the current 24-week limit.
It does not allow exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape, incest or human trafficking. However, it allows the procedure when abortion is considered necessary to save the mother’s life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality.
