Pilot Brian Slingerland and his friend John Fer have been missing since Thursday night.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story refers to John Fer as John Reimer.
Update
The Canadian Armed Forces has confirmed that a small plane is being searched, which is reportedly overdue since Thursday night.
Two people were on board when the plane took off from Delhi, Ont. around 3:45 p.m. this afternoon. The missing were on their way to the Marathon before the London Flight Information Center announced that the plane was late.
Major Trevor Reed, a senior public relations officer at the Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Center, confirmed this information to SooToday and said that rescue efforts to find the two missing persons are underway.
“Currently, search efforts are concentrated in an area about 60 kilometers north of Sault Ste. Marie, ”says Reed. “Since Thursday night, bad weather and heavy snow on the ground have made the search effort difficult.”
Reed says the rescue team conducted electronic searches, but they have not been successful so far.
“We currently have an RCAF CC130H Hercules, a CH-146 Griffon helicopter and a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter involved in the search,” Reed said. “We also have an OPP helicopter and a Canadian Coast Guard helicopter in support. Members of the Civil Aviation Search and Rescue Association board some aircraft as observers.
Two men have gone missing after their flight lost signal over the Wawa area on Thursday night, according to a Facebook post.
An original story
A search team was sent on Friday night to search for pilot Brian Slingerland and his friend John Fer. The search continued on Saturday, but poor visibility conditions made it difficult to find their whereabouts, the statement said.
According to the author of the publication Mary Reimer, who is John’s sister, the two flew from Ontario to Alberta. The publication does not indicate where Slingerland or Reimer came from.
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
Reimer’s original publication reads:
My brother John and his friend the pilot were traveling from Ontario to Alberta on a recently purchased plane. They arrived somewhere around Wawa Ontario when their signal was lost. They have been missing since last night. We are assembling a search team and they will go out tonight to search all day tomorrow. The weather conditions were not good last night and today is not better. Visibility is very poor. So the helicopters have not yet been able to search properly.
We are scared and, to put it mildly, so worried. If you are a praying person, please help us pray to be found safely.
