U.S. military trainers are already using the lessons of the Russian war in Ukraine to train soldiers for potential future conflicts with adversaries such as Russia or China, the Associated Press reported.
“I think at the moment the whole army is really watching what is happening in Ukraine and trying to learn from it,” Army Minister Christine Warmouth told the AP.
According to the AP, training this month at the National Training Center includes Russian-speaking role-players. The focus of the scenario is on enemy forces that use social media to create propaganda for American troops, as well as forces that use missiles in their efforts to take over cities.
Wormuth told the AP that the crisis in Ukraine shows how important the information domain will be for US forces.
Brig. General Kurt Taylor said the goal was to train brigades on how to use all their tools in battle to conduct a coordinated attack, including countering online disinformation.
Russia is using disinformation online and in state-sponsored media to dispel the story that Ukraine is the aggressor in the invasion. Using real images from the war, the propaganda machines give a different explanation of what happened.
Another part of the training will focus on dealing with an enemy that wants to use missiles to strike civilian areas, the AP reported.
Russia is attacking hospitals and residential buildings, along with other civilian buildings. Ukraine, among many others, has accused Russia of war crimes in attacks on civilian areas.
“We need to be prepared for urban battles where we have an enemy who fires indiscriminately with artillery,” Taylor said.
