The USS The Sullivans, a decommissioned Navy warship, sank in waters near Buffalo, New York.
The Navy destroyer, commissioned in 1943, began rolling off the starboard side on Thursday. Workers at the Naval and Military Park, where it is being held, have begun efforts to rescue the ship with the support of local and state politicians.
“USS Sullivans is a national historical landmark and a real treasure of West New York. Just ten days ago, on the 79th anniversary of the ship’s launch, we announced $ 490,000 in federal funding to support the repairs needed to protect the ship and the incredible story that goes with it, “said spokesman Brian Higgins of New York.

“Yesterday we were at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, honoring the veterans and joining the community when we were shocked and disgusted to see the Sullivans take in water to such an extent today,” Higgins continued. “We are in communication with the city of Buffalo and the Naval Park. We thank the U.S. Coast Guard Buffalo Station and local emergency personnel and the Navy Park team for everything they do to save Sullivan. “

Officials say the ship took over 3 million gallons when it began to sink. Crew members continue to pump water from the ship to maintain its buoyancy and integrity.
“The state of Sullivan today is an urgent reminder of the need for adequate funding for the National Maritime Heritage Program and to ensure that a floating military history like this one here in Buffalo Naval Park and across the country is preserved for generations to come,” Higgins said.

USS The Sullivans has been battling damage and destruction for years. In 2018, a hull breach caused the ship to sink before the government provided funds to renovate and secure the ship in the future.
This latest threat to the historic warship is alarming to citizens and lawmakers as Sullivan struggles to stay afloat.
