HUSSON – The suspect is charged after trying to escape from police in a chase that ended in a crash with multiple vehicles, killing one person and injuring another Friday afternoon.

Damian West, 21, has been charged with aggravated murder and aggravated assault. His photo was released on Saturday.

According to the Houston Police Department, the chase began after officers tried to stop a driver at HEB in block 1000 of Kempwood Drive in northwestern Houston. Police spotted West in a group responding to a street raid.

West then chased the police at high speed before reportedly going through a red light, crashing into a car and causing a chain accident in several vehicles nearby.

The crash of several vehicles occurred in block 15300 on Hampstead Road near West Little York, officials say.

The victim who died in the crash is an innocent observer, said HPD Assistant Chief of Staff Ban Tien. A passenger in the car was taken to hospital in serious condition.
