Blue Jays announced that they have put Hyun Jin Ryu on the 10-day list of injured with inflammation of the left forearm. Leftist Ryan Borucki, who started the year in IL by stretching his hamstring, will swap places with Ryu and take his place on the list.
Ryu started yesterday’s game for Jace, but managed to make only 53 flights at reduced speed, an indication that something is probably wrong. There is no timeline for Ryu’s absence, but any pitcher arm injuries are alarming. The left-hander has just started the third season of the four-year contract he signed to join the Blue Jays before the 2020 campaign. and Cavan Bijo, which heralds the beginning of a new competitive window.
Ryu was coming out of the elite 2019 season with the Dodgers, who saw him throw 182 2/3 innings of a 2.32 ERA ball. However, there were reasons for concern as he struggled to stay on the mound for the previous four seasons. He remained healthy in the shortened 2020 season, making 12 starts with a 2.69 ERA, helping Jace reach the extended postseason. Last year, he made two short trips to IL and managed to register 169 innings, although his ERA rose to 4.37 and his erasure rate dropped to 20.4%, his lowest percentage in years.
Although he may have been overtaken by people like Jose Berios, Kevin Gaussman and Alec Manoa, Ryu was still identified as a regular member of Jace’s rotation. As he is now postponed indefinitely, Ross Stripling will take his place, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet. Stripling made an accurate start on Friday and threw four zero innings against Athletics, throwing 62 pitches in the process.
As for Borutsky, he will add a new hand to the team’s bullpen. After moving from relief to relief in 2020, the left-hander showed excellent performance in the 2020 campaign. He threw 16 2/3 innings with 2.70 ERA, 28.8% strikeout, although relatively 16.4% percentage of walk. In 2021, he reduced walks to 11.2%, but also saw his strikeout drop to 21.4% and the ERA jump to 4.94. The 28-year-old has no chances and will have to stay on the list, otherwise he will lose his place. The current lists of 28 people will be reduced to 26 after May 1.
