Marin Le Pen’s team has accused the European Union of “coming to the rescue” of Emmanuel Macron after the anti-fraud bloc’s body said the right-wing candidate had embezzled more than 100,000 euros (83,000 British pounds) while has worked for the European Parliament.
A media publication, the French newspaper, revealed over the weekend that a report by Olaf, the European Anti-Fraud Office, accused Ms Le Pen and three other former MEPs – including her father Jean-Marie – of misusing European Parliament funds.
The report also claims that Ms. Le Pen personally embezzled about 137,000 euros (113,000 British pounds) of public money from Strasbourg during her time as MEP between 2004 and 2017. On Sunday, French prosecutors confirmed that they were considering the allegations. .
Representatives of the National Rally (RN) candidate said the allegations were intended to harm Ms Le Pen as she prepares to face Macron in the second round of next Sunday’s presidential election.
“Every time she is a candidate, she has a stinking ball a few days before the election. It usually comes from elsewhere in the European Union in one way or another, “said Laurent Jacobeli, a spokesman for RN.
“Distorted blows, lies, verbal insults… I think Macron’s team is so weak that it is ready for anything. The European Union is coming to the aid of its little soldier.
