St. Jerome, Que. –
Quebec’s police oversight body, the Office of Independent Investigation (BEI), has launched an investigation into a police chase in Saint-Jerome, Lorentian, in which two people were killed.
According to preliminary information from BEI, around 1:00 am on Sunday, the Saint-Jerome Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle and tracked down the car.
When they found him, they tried to stop the driver, but he refused to stop and instead accelerated, with police chasing him in a “short chase” on Highway 15, according to BEI.
While fleeing, the suspect’s vehicle collided with another car on a highway ramp and both caught fire.
The suspect, who was driving the stolen vehicle, is dead, as is one of the three passengers in the car that was hit during the chase.
The identities of the victims have not yet been revealed.
Five BEI investigators are tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding this police intervention. The agency has the task of investigating every time someone dies or is injured in the course of police intervention in Quebec.
They will be assisted by two Quebec police reconstruction technicians who will work under the supervision of BEI investigators.
BEI asks anyone who has witnessed this event to contact them through its website at www.bei.gouv.qc.ca/nous-contact.
