Another Russian general was killed in fighting in Ukraine, the mayor of St. Petersburg said in a statement Saturday.
Vladimir Frolov, deputy commander of Russia’s 8th Army, was killed in a battle earlier this week, according to a statement of condolences from the country’s second-largest city.
St. Petersburg Mayor Alexander Beglov attended the funeral, which took place at the city’s historic Seraphim Cemetery on Saturday, the statement said.
“Today we say goodbye to a real hero,” Beglov said.
“Vladimir Petrovich Frolov died a heroic death in a battle with Ukrainian nationalists. He sacrificed his life so that no more children, women and elderly people in Donbass could hear the bombings. To stop waiting for death and say goodbye when they leave home, as if for the last time.
Frolov is the last of several senior Russian servicemen to be killed after Russia invaded Ukraine 50 days ago.
