“Survivors” of the destroyed Russian flagship “Moscow” appear in footage published after its sinking

Russia has released footage of the crew of their sunken flagship “Moscow” – this seems to include the captain who was reported killed in the fall.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that the warship sank on Thursday, but said it was due to a fire caused by exploding munitions. Ukraine claims to have sunk the ship after hitting it with two missiles, but this has not been confirmed.

All the victims of the sinking ship with 500 crew members have not been identified by Russia, but Ukraine claims that First Rank Captain Anton Kupri was killed during the explosion.

Three days after the incident, Russia released a video showing Admiral Nikolai Evmenov addressing about 100 officers and sailors in parade uniform.

It is not clear when the silent shots were taken, but one of the officers looks like Captain Cupri.

In an interview shown at the end of the video, Adm Evmenov said that the officers and crew are currently at their base in Sevastopol and will continue their service in the fleet.

Moscow was the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, and reports of its sinking were described as a huge blow to Russian morale.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that the crew was completely evacuated after the incident.

Launched in 1982, Moscow is armed with 16 Vulcan anti-ship cruise missiles with a range of at least 700 km.

It was originally called “Glory” and is one of three missile cruisers with guided missiles of the “Glory” class. Its port is Sevastopol on the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula.

In April 2021, Interfax quoted a retired Russian admiral as saying that the 12,500-ton ship, which usually has a crew of about 500, was “the most serious ship in the Black Sea.”

The warship is said to be carrying 64 S-300F Rif air defense missiles, making it an important component of Russia’s air defenses over southern Ukraine.

Last month, Ukraine said it had destroyed a large Russian landing ship, the Orsk, in the smaller Sea of Azov northeast of the Black Sea.

But Russia still has a large fleet of cruisers, frigates, missile corvettes and landing craft operating near southern Ukraine.
