SALEM, Indiana – The body of a young boy who may have died last week was found by a mushroom hunter in a wooded area of South Indiana, and state police on Sunday asked the public for help in identifying the child.

Indiana Police Sergeant Kerry Hulls said the body of the boy, believed to be between the ages of 5 and 8, was found Saturday night in a heavily wooded area of Washington County, not far from the roadway.

Hulls said the agency did not know the boy’s name, which he described as black, 4 feet tall, with a thin build and short hair.

Hulls declined to give any details, including the possible cause of death or what the boy was wearing when his body was found. But he said the boy appeared to have died in the past week.

He also called on the public to provide any information about the boy, saying someone knew who the child was or knew the names of his parents or guardians.

“There’s someone at the Easter table this weekend, who may have someone who’s not there waiting to come,” Hulls said. “There are family members, friends, maybe someone from school who knows there may have been problems, who thinks it might be this child.”
