A 10-year-old boy was shot and killed in an apartment in Minneapolis while he was at home with another minor shortly before midnight on Friday, police said.

Officers answer a call about a shooting at a downtown apartment complex around 11:35 p.m., when they made the grim discovery.

Ambulance crews immediately began resuscitation and transferred the boy to a local hospital, where he later died.

“We have two minors alone in a residence with access to guns, and that’s always a bad recipe,” Minneapolis Police Department spokesman Gareth Parten told a news conference on Saturday.

An Henpenin County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy and determine the exact cause of the child’s death before identifying the boy.

Police did not say the age of the other minor, who was at home at the time of the shooting.

The Minneapolis Police Department is now calling on the public to secure their weapons after the shooting.

“We ask every gun owner or anyone who has a gun in their homes to take all necessary measures to secure their guns,” Parten said.

“That would include things like trigger locks and securing these weapons in a restraint that is locked and not easy to open, something like a weapon safe.”
