A school district in Indiana is reconsidering its Indian name after TikTok’s mascot went viral.

Anderson School Corporation has decided to review the mascot after criticism of a viral video on TikTok showing a high school basketball ritual where two students dress up as an Indian leader and a girl, perform a ceremonial trumpet show and dance, according to Fox 59

Sarah Holba shot the video before the basketball game and said that while she was disappointed, it was not surprising.

“It was disappointing, but it’s not surprising that this is happening,” Holba said.

More than 700,000 people have watched the TikTok video so far, and the post has received more than 150,000 comments.

Holba said that when she asked how long this tradition has been going on, others have told her that it has been going on for a long time.

“Anderson’s student section really did. You played the energetic band, “Holba said. “I asked some people around me who said, ‘Oh, Anderson did this forever.’

In response, according to the report, the head of the school corporation Anderson said that the ritual before the game was stopped and said that an internal commission was formed to review the use of the mascot throughout the system. He will also seek input from Indian community leaders before making a decision.

“We take this very seriously,” said Superintendent Joseph Kronk. “You know it’s always our intention to honor the Indian tradition, and maybe that was ignorance. Maybe we don’t know what we respect. Maybe we don’t respect him at all. “

The Anderson School Corporation used the mascot with the blessing of Chief William Anderson’s ancestors, according to Kronk.

Rachel Thunder, director of the Indiana and Kentucky Division of the American Indian Movement, told the newspaper that the tradition creates a dangerous environment.

“It really incites an environment that is hostile, dangerous and harmful,” Thunder said. “They teach non-local children that it is acceptable to engage in culturally violent behavior and to maintain inaccurate misconceptions.”
