The British Columbia Office of Independent Investigations has been called in to investigate the death of a man while in custody in Surrey over the weekend.

According to police accounts, the man was arrested in connection with an investigation into domestic violence last Friday.

The RCMP said tonight that the man had reacted during regular inspections of prisoners, but found that he had not responded during an inspection of the cells on Saturday afternoon.

“First aid was immediately provided by staff and a shift nurse working in the cell,” the RCMP said in a press release.

“Emergency medical services were called and paramedics continued to provide medical care until the man was pronounced dead.

The IIO says it has been notified and will conduct an independent investigation to determine whether police actions contributed to his death.

The IIO asks any person with relevant information about the incident to contact the toll-free witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
