The traditional White House Easter egg roll is back on the South Lawn after a two-year absence from Covid on Monday, the festive mood of the first time Joe Biden hosted it, in stark contrast to the political events of the Donald Trump era.
“My job is to keep out the rain,” the president said as he joined First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and thousands of children and their families for the one-day event.
In the end, the weather did not help and delivered Easter soaking on Monday, reminiscent of the egg roll in 2019, organized by Trump, which was the newest before the pandemic intervened.

But the rain was one of the few similarities. Instead of talking about the border wall and other campaign rhetoric, Trump throws signed hats in the crowd and Donald Trump Jr. declares his own daughter the “winner” in the egg race, this year’s event was themed around education and had a much lighter feel. , charged as an “egg roll”.
Jill Biden, a college professor, made the introduction from the south balcony of the lawn, surrounded by her husband and two huge Easter bunnies:
As your first lady and as a teacher, I have seen time and time again that learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. There are so many fun learning opportunities around us every day. And this is especially true here in the White House.
For generations, presidents, first ladies and children, just like you, have celebrated the Easter Egg together, competing and making crafts, reading books and, of course, meeting the Easter Bunny.
Education never stops. The resolute spirit of education is what we wanted to honor in this Easter egg roll. So we turned the South Lawn into a school community.
About 30,000 children and their families were invited to attend the celebration. In addition to the egg roll and egg hunt, events included a school activity area, a reading area, a talent show, an agricultural teaching location, a photo station, a physical “egg-growing” area with an obstacle course, and a cafeteria where children will learn to make treats, according to Reuters.
The costumed characters included several from Sesame Street and The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss.
Since its first appearance on Easter Monday in 1878, the White House egg roll has traditionally been considered a non-political event. Biden said: “It’s so special. It means so much to see children and all families appear, joy, laughter. ”
