From the water kingdom of Atlantis to the dangerous deserts of Arakis, Jason Momoa can travel to the world of Minecraft video games for Warner Bros., Variety confirmed.
The Aquaman and Dune star is in talks to join an action film based on the popular video game Minecraft, which is the best-selling game of all time with more than 238 million copies sold since its release in 2011.
Jared Hess, best known for directing Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre and others, will direct the film. Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce, and Jill Messic will be posthumously credited for his work on the film before his death in 2018. John Berg, Cale Boiter and John Spices will be executive producers. Mojang Studios, the Swedish video game developer behind Minecraft, will produce through Lydia Winters and Vu Bui.
Minecraft launched in 2011 and immediately became a worldwide hit. Players can create their own 3D worlds using colored blocks by digging materials and making objects. In 2021, there were nearly 140 million users per month, and the game was introduced to multiple video game systems, received spinoffs, and won many awards over the years. Microsoft acquired Mojang Studios for $ 2.5 billion in 2014, one of the first major acquisitions by video game developers.
A film about Minecraft has been running for years, with Sean Levy, Rob McElheny and Peter Solette negotiating for a director. At one point, Steve Carell was assigned to star in a film adaptation.
The next one for Momoa is “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom”, which is scheduled for March 17, 2023 and it is accelerating its engine for “Fast and Furious 10”.
The news of the film was first announced by Ankler.
