Kamloops broke the record for low temperatures on Saturday, as inappropriate for the season cool weather persisted over the holiday weekend.

Dave Ray, a meteorologist at Environment Canada, said a low of -5.5 C was recorded at Kamloops Airport on Saturday. This broke the old record of -5.0 set in 1971.

“A dozen and a half, maybe up to two dozen plates [were] smashed through the interior for yesterday morning, “Ray told Castanet Kamloops on Sunday.

Ray said the airport had a low of -3.5 early Sunday morning, and although he could not yet confirm whether the temperature had broken records, “it’s still quite cold.”

“Given the normal for this time of year is the lowest plus four, so even this morning we are about seven and a half degrees below normal,” he said.

Ray said Merritt and Cache Creek also set temperature records on Saturday, recording low levels of -8.3 C and -4.1 C, respectively.

On Good Friday, 13 districts across the province – including Lytton and Hope – exceeded or linked record lows.
