After a break from the Marvel cinematic universe, Natalie Portman returns and is more powerful than ever in the first teaser for “Thor: Love and Thunder”.
The fourth film in the Thor series is directed by Taika Whitey, who directs the well-received Thor: Ragnarok. The film follows in the footsteps of Avengers: End of the Game, which ends with Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth), who sank after the fall of his kingdom of Asgard, leaving Earth with the Guardians of the Galaxy. The teaser began with him as a member of the band, with Chris Pratt, Pom Clementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel repeating their roles. Former MCU stars Tessa Thompson and Whitey himself – as rock gladiator Korg – will also return for the film, but the highlight of the teaser comes in the final seconds when Portman’s Jane Foster reveals herself as the new Mighty Thor.
Set on Guns’ N Roses’ ‘Sweet Child’ O Mine ‘, the trailer begins with Thor in search of self-discovery. “These hands were once used for battle, now they are only modest instruments of peace,” he said as he set aside his new Stormbreaker hammer and watched the intergalactic sunset. “Now I need to know exactly who I am.”
After a training setup for weight loss and new clothing, Thor abandons the Guardians of the Galaxy to find his own path. He claims that his days as a superhero are over and travels with Corg across the galaxy. The teaser shows brief flashes of Thompson’s Valkyrie ruling New Asgard as its king, a man with lightning who is probably Russell Crowe as the Greek god Zeus, and Thor on a pirate ship kissing an unknown woman. Finishing the teaser, Portman summons Thor Mölnir’s hammer, which is now assembled into magic pieces, and debuts her comic book-accurate Mighty Thor costume.
There is no sign of the villain of Christian Bale, Gore, the God of Butcher, but the description of the plot describes him as a murderer seeking the disappearance of the gods. Thor, Valkyrie, Korg and Jane will have to unite in a “painful space adventure to unravel the mystery of the revenge of the god Butcher and stop it before it’s too late.”
The story of “Love and Thunder” is based on critics of Jason Aaron on the comic book “The Mighty Thor”, in which Jane Foster, who goes out and broke up with Thor, takes the mantle of the superhero after the sacred hammer Mölnir considered Odinson unworthy and deprived him of power mu. In the comics, however, Foster’s newly discovered reinforcement comes at a great price: every time she uses a hammer, her breast cancer gets worse and worse. However, it is unclear whether the film will follow the same storyline.
Portman took on the role of Jane after her last appearance in Thor: The Dark World in 2013. It is reported that she left the series due to dissatisfaction with the film and in particular the replacement of original director Patti Jenkins with Alan Taylor. However, it is reported that Whitey directly persuaded Portman to return to the MCU for the project.
In addition to the old faces, “Love and Thunder” will introduce new members of the cast in the franchise. Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher is a more recent addition to Marvel’s canon, created by Aaron and Esad Ribich in 2013. Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone are also expected to take part in episodic performances. Jenny Morris and Simon Russell Beale have been cast for undisclosed roles in the film. Jamie Alexander, Sean Gunn and Jeff Goldblum will also reprise their roles at MCU.
Whitey wrote the screenplay for the film with Jennifer Caitin Robinson. The film was produced by Kevin Feigy and Brad Winderbaum. Marvel Studios produces. The film was shot in Sydney, Australia last year, after being repeatedly postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The premiere of “Thor: Love and Thunder” is in theaters on July 8. Watch the full trailer below.
