Toronto Subway: A suspect is wanted after pushing a woman

The suspect, who allegedly pushed a woman on the rails at a Toronto subway station on Sunday night, is now wanted on a charge of attempted murder, police said.

The incident happened at Yonge station shortly after 9 p.m.

When ambulances arrived, they found the victim conscious and breathing, police said. She was rushed to a trauma center in a serious but stable condition.

It was later confirmed that the victim had a broken rib.

Police initially said the woman was hit by the train, but a TTC spokesman later clarified that the woman managed to roll over under the edge of the platform, preventing her from being hit by the train.

Toronto police released a surveillance image of the suspect on Monday in an attempt to identify her.

Police described the suspects as blond hair with a medium build. It is said that she was last seen wearing a gray Lewis shirt, a black jacket, black trousers, white shoes, pink and gray heels and a gray bag.

It is unclear why the suspect pushed the woman, and police say there is no reason to believe the two women knew each other.

Toronto Mayor John Torrey issued a statement Monday afternoon in response to the incident, calling it a “shocking attack.”

“I spoke to Chief Ramer and he assures me that intensive efforts are being made to detain the person in charge,” he said.

“I am also confident that the specialized transit workers who were on duty when this incident occurred are receiving the support they need.”

The TTC is safe and must remain safe, and I will follow this incident to make sure that the TTC and its partners, including the police, do everything possible to protect the safety of riders and transit staff.

The incident caused the TTC to suspend subway service on line 2 between St. George and Broadview. Trains on line 1 also bypassed Bloor-Yonge station due to the accident.

Regular service on both subway lines resumed shortly after 11 p.m.

This is the second time in five months that someone has been pushed onto the tracks at Bloor-Yonge Subway Station. On November 26, police said a suspect pushed a man who fell on the rails as a train approached.
