Russia sets “deadline” for capitulation of Mariupol defenders News

Russian forces have given the last Ukrainian defenders in Mariupol an extra chance to surrender this morning, as Ukraine says it is prioritizing efforts to evacuate vulnerable civilians from the city.

President Putin’s forces have surrounded the Azovstal steel plant in the southeastern port city, where thousands of soldiers and civilians are being held.

Russia is said to have hit a large industrial complex full of underground shelters and tunnels, with bombs to destroy bunkers last night, after weeks of heavy shelling and bombing.

Some 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers reportedly detained at the plant have been given a new 12:00 British deadline to surrender today, but so far there are no indications that they will.
