Ukraine has said it has received only spare parts for fighter jets, although the Pentagon has said it has sent both spare and whole planes to the country.
“Ukraine has not received new aircraft from partners!” This was announced by the BBC of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a post on Facebook on Wednesday.
However, it says that it has received spare aircraft parts and components “for the restoration and repair of the fleet of aircraft that are in the air force of the Air Force, which will allow the commissioning of more equipment.”
The statement came a day after Defense Department spokesman John F. Kirby told reporters that the Pentagon was sending both spare components and full aircraft to Ukraine.
“I would just say, without going into what other nations provide [Ukraine] have received additional platforms and parts to be able to increase the size of their fleet – the size of their fleet of aircraft. Platforms and parts, “he said.
Asked what he meant by “platforms,” Kirby said, “The platform is an airplane in this case. They’ve been given extra airplanes and aircraft parts to help them, you know, lift more airplanes into the air.”
Kirby declined to specify the number or type of aircraft delivered to the Ukrainian military.
The Ministry of Defense declined to comment to Insider. The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
Last week, President Joe Biden announced a $ 800 million military package for Ukraine, which includes artillery shells and armored personnel carriers. He is expected to announce another aid package later this week, NBC News reported.
Ukraine has been asking Western allies to send fighter jets for weeks. Russia launched a complete invasion of the country on February 24.
In a speech Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the war would be over if Ukraine received more supplies from its allies.
“If we had access to all the weapons we need, which our partners have and which are comparable to the weapons used by the Russian Federation, we would already be ending this war,” he said.
