DULUTE – Five people believed to be connected were found dead at a home in the East Hillside neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon.
The situation began shortly after 11 a.m. when Hermantown police responded to a check on the well-being of a person in Hermantown, according to a press release from the Duluth Police Department. The person’s home was inspected, but police were unable to contact the person.
Hermantown police contacted Duluth police with information leading to a house on Block 700 on East 12th Street in Duluth. The officers had information that led them to believe that the person had a weapon, which led them to call for help from several district law enforcement agencies. Neighbors on both sides of the house were connected and evacuated before the property was searched.

During a search of the property, police in Duluth found five dead and a dead dog in the house. Their names are kept until family members are notified. The person who was the subject of the investigation is believed to be one of the deceased.
Police believe there is no threat to public safety at the moment.

“Earlier today, there was an unimaginable tragedy that struck our community, which is very, very difficult for us. It makes us have heavy, heavy hearts,” Duluth Police Chief Mike Tusken told a news conference Wednesday afternoon. “Know that our thoughts and prayers are certainly with the family and friends of these victims.”
Duluth Mayor Emily Larson reiterated Tusken’s opinion in a statement on Twitter.
“Things have happened today that cannot be undone. Tonight we are a community in pain and shock, sharing grief over the loss of our people,” she wrote. “… My heart, like yours, absolutely hurts for the pain of loved ones and the fear that people probably experienced on their last day here with us.”
The investigation into the incident continues. More information is expected to be published the next day.
