A BC teacher will not return to an independent school after numerous cases of professional misconduct.
Joseph James Hizon Arnesto taught from 7th to 12th grade, according to a consent agreement issued by the teacher’s commissioner for regulation on Tuesday.
During his time at the school, Arnesto violated professional boundaries with four students by exchanging messages or chatting on social media about students’ personal and romantic lives.
At the time of the announcement, the students were in 12th grade (student A), 8th grade (student B), 10th grade (student C) and 8th grade (student D).
When student A graduated from high school, Arnesto announced that he wanted to continue a romantic relationship, the agreement said.
Arnesto continued to write with Student B for four years. When the student entered 10th grade, the school principal told the teacher to avoid non-school issues with the students. Then, less than a week before the student graduated from high school, Arnesto told the student that he wanted to continue a romantic relationship with them.
With student C, Arnesto would send a message to the student about a mixture of school and personal topics, such as their romantic life.
The agreement states that Arnesto received a written warning from the principal after he was found involved in a personal conversation with student D. This warning is a reminder to Arnesto of his previous misconduct.
Arnesto holds a professional qualification certificate issued by the Director of Attestation in 2015 under the Teachers Act.
In 2020, he signed an agreement not to take on a role that requires a certificate of qualification from the Ministry of Education, a certificate of an independent teacher’s school or a letter of permission, as defined in the Teachers Act.
Arnesto agreed to the revocation of his certificate of qualification in force from March 30, 2022 and a 10-year ban on re-application.
