Legal weed sales began just as the sun rose over New Jersey on Thursday, launching what is expected to be a multibillion-dollar industry as political leaders promise to help those most hurt by the failed war on drugs.

Crowds of customers lined up before 6 a.m. in Bloomfield and Patterson to be among the first to buy legal weed in New Jersey – and in one case a customer waited from 3:30 a.m.
