Karanvir Sahota was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the April 8 attack and died a week later. An autopsy on Wednesday confirmed he died of a stab wound to the chest.

The Edmonton Police Department said on Wednesday that charges were pending against several young suspects.

“I want to thank the community for coming together to support each other during this tragic loss of life,” said a sergeant in the EPS homicide unit. Colin Leathom said in a statement.

“We also appreciate the help of those who have approached us with information to help us move forward as we continue to investigate this sensitive and complex case.”

GoFundMe’s Sahota family page has raised more than $ 200,000 for his grieving family. His cousins, who organized the fundraiser, said Sahota’s father had a long-term disability and his mother could not go to work because of her grief, and they needed help with short-term living expenses.

Edmonton Public School Board Chair Trisha Estabrooks said Tuesday that what happened outside of McNally weighed heavily on her mind.

“As a guardian who represents the area, as a mother, as a parent – anyone who has watched what has happened in our city over the last week just feels it,” she said.

“To know that something so violent can happen in a place where children gather, where children come to study, is just devastating news.”

She said she had heard concerns from teachers and parents after Sahot’s death, and the school board would work with the community to answer difficult questions and provide support through grief.
