Instagram will lower the rating of Reels, which are just robbers of TikTok

Instagram will soon lower the rating of Reels videos that are not original for the platform. This means that all re-shared content from other applications such as TikTok or any short video format platform will be downgraded to give more credit to the original content.

Instagram CEO Adam Moseri recently took to Twitter to announce new changes to the app. In a video, Moseri explains that Instagram will add three new features / changes to the platform – product tags, improved human tags and a higher ranking for the original drums.

“If you create something from scratch, you should get more credit than if you re-share something you found from someone else,” Moseri said in the video. This change leaves several things in the air.

But what about Reels, which are re-shared videos from your own handles on other platforms? Are they less original than the videos you create directly on Instagram Reels? We need to find out soon.

“Identifying originality is difficult”

In response to a comment, when providing a little more clarity on the issue, Moseri said that “determining originality is difficult” and that the platform will “rethink over time” what is considered original and what is not. While there is no more clarity on the same, this move can also be interpreted as a tactic to further persuade people not to re-share videos from platforms such as TikTok on Reels.

Although Reels is doing well in markets like India, one reason is that TikTok is banned here. But in markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, etc., Instagram Reels faces stiff competition from TikTok, which remains the leading short video platform. This would explain why Instagram is urging creators to create original content for Reels, instead of simply republishing their TikTok video on the platform. After all, he wants fewer videos that have the TikTok logo added, which is currently the case with much of the platform’s viral content.

Product labels and improved labels for humans

Meanwhile, the other two new features of Instagram are relatively easier to understand. Product labels allow users to tag products and drive traffic or attention to a business, creator or company you love. This feature was already available to some users, but will now be available to all Instagram users.

Enhanced Labels features allow users to categorize themselves as dancer, rapper or chef to make themselves more recognizable. This category will then appear when the user is tagged in another post, allowing the credit to be returned to the original source.
