The documents describe in detail the pressure and repulsion of the Liberals’ promise to block the unvaccinated by EI

From the Canadian press:

Domestic government documents show that the Liberals’ promise to prevent unvaccinated people from receiving unemployment benefits does not eliminate all opportunities for them to enter the employment system.

Information notes prepared for Employment Minister Carla Qualtrow say that unvaccinated workers can qualify for EI benefits, even if they have COVID-19.

The laws governing the social safety net program do not have explicit rules on the eligibility of EI for anyone who has refused to be vaccinated.

While Qualtrow was told that the government could introduce rules around regular unemployment benefits, officials suggested the same could not be said about sickness benefits.

Documents prepared by Qualtrough’s department last fall suggest that employees have been advised not to block access to sickness benefits and to remove the incentive for sick workers to stay home with symptoms.

Details are contained in documents obtained from The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act, which outline some of the actions in the government, while employees are preparing for a wave of layoffs of workers who refuse to be vaccinated.

Quebec extends the mandate of the mask by two weeks – until mid-May

The situation in Quebec seems to be improving, but it is too early to end the mandate of the masks on May 1, says Dr. Luke Boylo, interim director of public health in Quebec.

He therefore recommended that the government extend the mandate of masks in public places and transit by two weeks – until mid-May.

Masks are the only remaining constraint on a Quebec pandemic.

“Some Quebecers may continue to wear masks (after mid-May) and that’s good,” Boalo told a news conference in Montreal. “We must continue to show civic solidarity.”

He said Quebec could be at or near the peak of cases in the sixth wave of the pandemic, although the number of people aged 70 and over with COVID-19 is still rising.

“Transmission of the virus may be delayed,” Boalo said, adding that “perhaps we have already reached a certain plateau – we have to wait a few more days to see.”

The increase in hospitalizations also seems to be slowing down. “It’s not declining, but the rise is slower than we saw two weeks ago,” he said.

But that doesn’t mean the hospital crisis is over.

Just over 2,400, the number of COVID-positive patients in Quebec hospitals is still high, Boalo said. And although the number of health workers absent due to COVID is declining, the network still lacks 10,000 workers.

In addition, Quebec is experiencing a late flu season, which puts extra strain on the system, he added.

Boalo also noted that it was unclear what impact the Easter weekend would have on the situation.

Surveys show that a majority of Quebec residents say they will continue to wear masks once they are no longer required.

So why keep a mask mandate?

In response to a reporter’s question, Boileau said that in other jurisdictions, when restrictions on masks were lifted, many people continued to wear them for several days, but then eventually abandoned them.

He is worried that this will happen in Quebec.

A reporter asked Boileau if he was expecting a seventh wave of COVID in the fall?

In response, Boalo said it was impossible to know.

However, he said it would be normal to see an increase in cases in the autumn.

“But the intention is not to return” pandemic restrictions, Boalo added.

In other news, Quebec has announced that immunocompromised people will no longer have to isolate themselves for 21 days if they have symptoms of COVID-19. From now on, the province recommends isolating them for 10 days.
