Peterborough police are investigating a shooting on Park Street

Several people, including a man believed to have been shot in the chest, were taken by paramedics to the Peterborough Regional Health Center for treatment after a shooting early Wednesday afternoon in Peterborough.

Late Wednesday afternoon, city police said no one had been arrested. There is no confirmation from the police whether the shooting was a murder and there is no information about the condition of the people taken to hospital.

“The incident is not considered accidental and there are no public safety concerns,” said city police spokeswoman Sandra Duek.

Police plan to reveal more details at a news conference on Thursday.

Earlier, city police asked people to avoid the Park Street South area between Romaine and Princess streets, while city police are investigating the shooting, which took place just before 1 pm on Wednesday.

City police, including heavily armed emergency response officers, and several ambulances were called to the scene after calling 911 from one of the houses just before 1 p.m.

The area between two houses on 122 Park St. S. and 126 Park St. S. was cordoned off with yellow police tape along with Park Street lanes in front of the two houses, blocking traffic on Park Street between Romaine Street and Princess Street.

Around 3:30 p.m., the street was reopened to traffic, but investigators were expected to remain in the area for some time.

A woman, who did not want to be named, said she lived in an apartment at 122 St.

But then she looked through the peephole at her front door.

“And then I saw a man lying there on my front step,” she said, adding that he seemed to have been shot in the chest.

She said the man was bleeding from his mouth.

She then said she saw two black men wearing masks, and then noticed another man who also appeared to have been shot: “He was hit in the leg.”

But the woman did not call 911: she said she shouted at her roommates to call the police.

“I didn’t want to leave my door at that time until they (the alleged shooters) disappeared. I just shouted, “Call 911!” All over the apartment, because everyone could hear me, “she said.

She added that as soon as she thought it was safe to leave the apartment, she went out with her dog.

She was wearing a thin sweater and was shivering on the sidewalk with her dog and her partner – who was not home at the time and had come to meet her – while police cordoned off the area, including their house.

Nicholas Hallett, who lives further south along Park Street, said he was home and heard four gunshots.

“I heard the shots and I heard the ambulances – and I connected the dots,” he said.

He then went outside and found that the emergency cars had arrived. He also said he knew the landlord, who owns both 122 and 126 Park St. N.

Hallett, 21, said he had lived in Peterborough all his life and believed crime was getting worse all the time.

“This city has gone downhill,” he said. “It’s getting worse and worse every year.”
