The royal family paid tribute to the queen on her 96th birthday after a new photo of the monarch was released to celebrate the occasion.

A tweet from the royal family’s account shared a black-and-white photo of the two-year-old monarch taken in 1928.

The message then read: “She was never expected to be queen, and this year Her Majesty is celebrating her #platinum anniversary – for the first time in British history.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also posted on Twitter two photos, one of the couple with Her Majesty at the Chelsea Flower Show a few years ago and another of the Queen and Prince Philip, surrounded by their great-grandchildren.

Inspiration

Calling the Queen “inspiration”, they wrote: “Wishing Her Majesty the Queen a very happy 96th birthday today!”

The Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, also posted on Twitter.

They wished her a “special special 96th birthday” along with various photos, including one of Charles kissing his mother’s hand.

Her Majesty will spend the day at Sandringham, Norfolk Manor, where she enjoyed family reunions with the Duke of Edinburgh, her late husband.

To mark the occasion, the Royal Windsor Horse Show released an image of the monarch taken last month at Windsor Castle.

In it, the Queen is surrounded by two ponies called Bybeck Nightingale and Bybeck Katie, who will take part in honoring the monarch on the show.

The change of guard continued as usual at 11 a.m., but took place at Windsor Castle, not Buckingham Palace, to mark the day.

Busy Easter

The Queen’s birthday comes after an eventful Easter holiday, during which she was visited by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Harry said his grandmother was “in great shape” when they met before he and his wife Megan traveled to the Netherlands for the Invictus Games.

Speaking to NBC’s Today, he said he wanted to make sure she was “protected” and had “the right people around her.”

The monarch is believed to remain at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Wood Farm villa while in Sandringham, a property she said her late husband “loved” because “the sea was so close”.

The Queen spoke of the villa on the property when she hosted a rare public event in Sandringham on February 5, on the eve of her platinum anniversary.

Speaking to the Queen the other day, Theresa Thompson, a 70-year-old retired Wood Farm housekeeper, said: “The whole royal family loves Wood Farm because it’s far from the road, it’s small, it’s intimate.

“You don’t have many officials, only close staff.

“And they can literally relax in the family home, it’s wonderful, and I had a wonderful 22 years down there, it was the best moment of my life without a doubt.”

The Queen’s 96th birthday was also celebrated by Barbie, with the toy brand releasing a limited series of the monarch’s doll.
