UC Berkeley Threat: On-Site Shelter Order Revoked on Cal Campus After Man Threatens to “Hurt” People

BURKLEY, Calif. (KGO) – An on-site shelter order was revoked by Berkeley police after a man threatened to “injure” people on Cal’s campus, sparking a massive search for the suspect Thursday, authorities said.

Police say the buildings will remain locked and everyone has been asked to leave campus safely for the rest of the day. Personal classes remain canceled for Thursday.

UC Berkeley WarnMe: The shelter on the spot has been raised. Please leave campus in a safe and orderly manner on the nearest available route. The UCPD determined on the basis of its investigation that it was appropriate to end the shelter. The buildings will https://t.co/qhOwAlE42o

Employees of the University of California, Berkeley, sent an email explaining that the blockade was due to an emerging active threat to a shooter involving a student who had been suspended for threatening behavior.

Police at the University of California, Berkeley, tweeted: “There is NO active shooter on campus. Police are actively looking for a person who may want to hurt specific people. Please continue to take shelter at this time. “

A UC spokesman, Berkeley, said: “So far, all I can say is that there is a police investigation into a possible threat and that everyone on campus has been asked to take shelter on the spot. In addition, those who are not on campus are encouraged to stay away. “

A warning message informs students that all on-campus services such as libraries, dining rooms and parking garages are closed until further notice, and personal hours are canceled for the rest of the day.

Some neighboring schools have also closed their doors.

The United School District of Berkeley said it has put six schools on a “soft block” of plenty of caution because of their proximity to the college campus. The soft lock means all school gates and doors are locked, but students can move freely in school buildings, said Trish McDermott, a spokeswoman for Berkeley Unified.

A class of sophomores on a trip to the university campus took refuge on the spot when the blockade was issued, McDermott said.

“They are safe and well and we have contacted the parents and carers,” she said.
