According to numerous reports, two Russian oligarchs were found dead along with their wives and children one day apart.
Vladislav Avaev, a former vice president of Gazprombank, was found dead from a gunshot wound to his apartment in Moscow on Monday, Russia’s Tass news agency reported.
The Moscow Investigation Department did not name the victims in a public statement on the case, but Tas said an unnamed source had confirmed their identities.
Investigators wrote in a statement that they gave priority to the theory that Avaev shot his wife and daughter, and then himself.
More than 2,000 miles away in Spain, another oligarch, Sergei Protosenya, was found hanged and his wife and daughter stabbed to death, the Spanish television channel Telecinco reported. His body was found on Tuesday, the Spanish newspaper El Punta Vui reported.
He was found with a bloody knife and an ax next to him, Telecinco reported.
Protosenya was a former vice president and chief accountant of Novatek, a large gas company with close ties to Gazprombank.
He, his wife and daughter were staying at a rented luxury villa in Lloret de Mar, a Catalan coastal town, for the Easter season, according to Telecinco.
Police were alerted to the death when Protosenya’s son, who was in France, raised the alarm after no one picked up the phone, Telecinco reported.
Mossos D’Esquadra, the Catalan police, confirmed on Tuesday that it was investigating three deaths, again without naming the victims. A spokesman for the forces referred Insider to the public statement when he asked for additional information about Protosenya’s death.
Mossos D’Esquadra did not give a motive, but according to El Punta Vui, a working theory for investigators is also that Protosenya killed his family before hanging himself.
Protosenya did not leave a suicide note and there are no blood stains on his body, El Punta Vui said, without citing sources.
He had a personal fortune of more than $ 433 million, according to Telecinco.
None of the men was on the list of international sanctions in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
