Google makes it easy to reject all search and YouTube cookies in Europe. These changes will begin in France before expanding to the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
Visitors who have logged out or are in incognito mode will have the option to decline or accept all cookies using buttons. A third option offers more options, allowing users to customize their choices.
How it looks. Here’s a screenshot provided by Google on YouTube’s new look.
Why now? The French data protection authority CNIL fined Google.fr 150 million euros on January 6. Google has been given three months to provide an easy way for users to refuse cookies. If Google had not met this deadline, the company would have paid 100,000 euros a day.
Why we care. This is a big change for Google, which in the past made it difficult to give up cookies. According to a Google blog post: “This update meant we needed to rework the way cookies work on Google’s sites and make profound, coordinated changes to Google’s critical infrastructure. We also knew that these changes would affect not only Search and YouTube, but also the sites and content creators who use them to help grow their business and make a living. ” Google believes it can balance privacy while helping digital businesses grow and thrive. Now it’s time to find out how it will work.
