Twitter will recommend third-party applications to prevent harassment

Twitter is turning to outside developers for help in preventing harassment on its platform. According to a new experiment, the company will recommend third-party moderation applications as an additional measure that users can take on the application’s built-in tools.

With the update, first announced by TechCrunch, Twitter will show recommendations for a series of third-party applications when a user blocks or mutes another person. For now, apps include Block Party, a tool that allows people to automatically block accounts that are likely to be a source of harassment; A bodyguard who can automatically moderate responses; and moderate, which helps users manage their mentions.

These tools are now available, but Twitter users used to have to look for these services to set them up. The company will now recommend them in its app and website along with its own blocking and jamming tools.

As TechCrunch notes, the change is also the latest sign that Twitter is once again breaking through among third-party developers with whom it has sometimes had a tumultuous relationship. Moderation apps are just a handful of a wider range of third-party services that Twitter is promoting as part of its updated developer platform. Ultimately, Twitter may recommend other specialized applications in various parts of its service, the company told TechCrunch, although it did not offer details.
