Earthquake before the new era: No tsunami expected

No tsunami is expected after an earthquake off the northwest coast of Vancouver Island on Saturday afternoon.

Earthquakes Canada shared details of the quake on Twitter shortly before 2:30 p.m., initially tweeting that the magnitude was 4.1 before revising the estimate to 5.0.

The federal agency said the quake was located 166 kilometers west of the village of Port Alice on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers and was not felt, according to Earthquakes Canada, although at least one Twitter user said he noticed some tremor.

Jeffrey Bachelar told CTV News that he had lunch at his home in the northern island of Cole Harbor when he felt the quake.

“I had the feeling that the chair had turned into a bag of gel and I was pushed as if I had quickly overcome a speed bump,” he told CTV News.

“Then it’s over.”

He added that this was the first time he had felt an earthquake.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center and the Emergency Information Agency said no tsunami was expected.
