9th grader Janice Si said she had just met her friends for lunch on Thursday when an older student came up behind her and pushed her away.
It was the beginning of an alleged brutal attack that left a 14-year-old girl unconscious on the steps of Hugh Boyd High School in Richmond, British Columbia. Xie was hospitalized.
Still in pain, with a swollen eye, she told Global News on Friday that he said the attacker should be “smart” because rumors are not always true.
“I hope nothing like this happens to anyone else,” she said, sitting next to her father, Tim Sorenson. “Just because you hear something doesn’t mean it’s real.”

Xie said the older student believed she had heard rumors of feelings between him and another girl. It was confusing, she added, because she hadn’t actually spoken to him before and had no idea who she liked.
After he allegedly pushed her, Xie said he followed her while her friends tried to hold him back. Finally, the group sat down to eat by the main stairs of the school.
Then he runs out, she said.
“My friends tried to detain him, but they could not detain him. I tried to defend myself, but I was knocked out. I don’t remember what happened next. “

Xie said she knew she had been punched in the head and her friends told her that the student kept kicking and hitting her after she fainted. When she woke up, she said she was still up the stairs, surrounded by teachers and first aid teams.

“I was really scared, I couldn’t breathe, I had hyperventilation,” she said.
“Knowing I fainted and he’s still attacking me, and that’s what happened at school – it’s scary to think about it and think about going back to school.”

Xie said the teachers called 911 and did their best to record what happened before the paramedics took her to the hospital. However, they did not call Xie’s parents immediately, according to her father.

Sorenson said he was working from his home office when his wife began receiving text messages from Xie’s friends telling her what had happened about an hour after the alleged attack. They also received a call from Xie’s younger sister.
“We got the call, left everything, got in the car and went to school,” he said. “When he saw her lying there on the ground,” so many thoughts went through her head. At that moment, I was just furious. “

Sorenson said he understood that school staff may have been busy at the moment, but should have received a call earlier.

“How can we fix this?” He asked. “The only person (at school) I spoke to said the staff was busy trying to get the boy back and also dealing with all the other students.”
In a statement sent by email, Richmond School District № 38 did not draw attention to the difference between the alleged attack and contact with Xie’s parents. He confirmed that the student is not currently attending school and the Richmond RCMP is investigating the incident.

“As stated in the Richmond School District Code of Conduct, the Board of Education recognizes its commitment to all members of the school community to ensure a positive climate and a safe, healthy environment,” said David Sadler, director of communications and marketing, in a statement.
“To this end, all members of the school community are expected to behave in an ethical and lawful manner that demonstrates respect for themselves, others, property and the environment.”
Sadler said the district maintains regular communication with Xie’s parents, provides additional advice to the school community and will continue to ensure the implementation of the district’s code of conduct, regulations and guidelines.

In its own written statement, Richmond RCMP said it could not provide details of an alleged attack on a local high school due to the nature of the investigation, including privacy issues under the Juvenile Criminal Justice Act.

“We are aware of the potential impact that such a situation can have on the school community,” wrote Chap. Adriana O’Malley.
“We want to reassure the public that we are working with the Richmond School District to ensure the safety and well-being of those directly involved, as well as the entire school community.

Xie, meanwhile, said her computed tomography at the hospital was clear and she would spend several days resting and icing her head and face to reduce swelling. She was allowed to return to school on Monday, but said she may need more time.
Sorenson said he was proud of his daughter’s courage and calm throughout the incident.
“I am really happy that she is such a person, because she is not an instigator and she is definitely difficult, that’s for sure,” he told Global News.
“I’m still completely upset about the whole thing, so I really want her to feel safe at school and I want my other daughter to feel safe at the same school. I hope there may be some way to make school safer for all children. ”
