Philadelphia police investigate double shooting on football field near Temple University campus

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – Police are investigating a double shooting on Friday at a football field in North Philadelphia near the Temple University campus.

The shooting took place at about 6 pm at the intersection of 11th Street and Cecil Be Moore Avenue.

A video received by Action News showed a dispute in the stands above the training field.

Police say a 35-year-old man was shot once in his left thigh. Another 35-year-old man was also shot in the right arm.

The video shows two men in a group of adults starting to walk away, after which one turned and aimed a gun, shooting two male victims.

Both victims were taken to Temple University Hospital, where they are listed in stable condition.

“It seems that there are six people in the stands, an argument ensued, one of the two men got into an argument and you see him pulling out a gun. He started shooting at the man he was arguing with and hit one of the other men who was just sitting in the stands, “said Captain John Walker, who heads the non-fatal shooting department at the Philadelphia Police Department.

Temple University has issued a signal on social media, urging people to avoid the area.

The stands of the football field are owned and managed by the preparatory school St. Joesph on the campus of Temple University.

Many students living in dormitories surrounding the field took photos and videos.

The lacrosse team of St. Joe’s Prep was finishing training for the day, and a youth football team was on the training field.

Olivia Malone saw the controversy escalate from her apartment at Temple University.

“People were just trying to jump the fence and get out, and the cops were here in two minutes,” said Malone, a sophomore.

The preparations for St. Joe’s were supposed to hold a football practice on the field on Saturday, but they moved elsewhere.

In an email to the school, St. Joe’s training officials said they would not use the site for the foreseeable future.

The coach of the youth football team did not want to be photographed in front of the camera, but he was afraid that the shooting would have a bad effect on the football team full of small children.

After the coaches and children received permission from the police, they continued to train.

Police did not say whether the adults involved in the dispute and the shooting were there for each training session.

No arrests have been made so far.
