Charles Herbster filed a lawsuit Friday against Republican Sen. Julie Slam.
Straw was quoted in an article in the Nebraska Examiner as saying that Herbster raised her skirt during a Republican fundraising dinner in 2019. She later issued a statement saying: “Today’s Nebraska report Examiner for Charles Herbster, who sexually assaulted me in 2019, when I was 22, is true. “
Herbster called the allegations in the article “100% false” and the lawsuit said: “As a result of defendant Slama’s false statements about him, the plaintiff has suffered severe damage to his reputation.”
In a statement released by his campaign on Friday, Herbster added: “As stated in my lawsuit, false accusations and attacks on my character are part of a larger scheme calculated to try to defeat my candidacy.”
Slam’s lawyer, Dave Lopez, told CNN on Friday night that the senator had not yet been sued, but he added in a statement: was categorically unfounded and frivolous. Senator Slama will vigorously defend himself against any such claim. Charles Herbster will be the subject of full civil disclosure if he continues with any legal attack on Senator Slam. “
Herbster’s candidacy for governor was backed by former President Donald Trump, who is due to attend a rally with Herbster in Nebraska on April 29.
Speaking at a news conference Wednesday, Herbster told reporters he had not discussed the allegations with Trump. A Trump spokesman did not respond to CNN when asked to comment on the allegations.
Herbster said that after the alleged incident in 2019, Slama had met with him several times, sought political donations from him, received a $ 10,000 donation from him, and even invited him to her wedding. Asked to comment on Herbster’s allegations and response, Slama made a statement to CNN.
“I was scared and felt obligated to meet with my attacker, Charles Herbster, because he is my voter, Republican megadonor and leading candidate for governor of Nebraska. “I was horrified that in addition to sexual assault, he would try to ruin my public reputation – that’s what he’s trying to do now,” Slama said earlier.
