Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk on Sunday threw some uncertainty into his plans to take over the social media platform Twitter, posting a statement saying he was “moving forward”.
Musk is known for his mysterious Twitter messages, which he often uses to attack people, post insults or just joke. The exact meaning of the last mysterious message was unclear, as it simply said, “We continue …”.
But the announcement came after a dramatic week in which Musk, the world’s richest man, secured $ 46.5 billion in funding to fund a possible hostile offer on Twitter, including $ 21 billion of his own money.
Funding commitments were outlined in a submission to the Securities and Exchange Commission last week. Musk already owns 9.2% of the social media platform and announced a $ 54.20 offer per share last week.
Musk’s offer is seen as a hostile offer because it bypasses the company’s board. Twitter has also launched a so-called protection against poison pills aimed at blocking Musk from building a stake of more than 15%.
Musk called himself an “absolutist of freedom of speech” and made it clear that he believed that Twitter did not give enough freedom to its millions of users. In a letter to the Twitter board, he said the platform “needs to be transformed as a private company.” He noted changes he could make to the company, including the introduction of a tweet editing button.
