In 2010, an engineering prototype of the iPhone 4 was left in a bar by an Apple engineer, giving the world a look at the phone months before its official debut. It is reported that a test unit of the upcoming Google Pixel Watch was left in a restaurant and now we have what seems to be our first detailed look at the smartwatch from different angles.
So far, the wave of leak-based renderings paints a picture of a round dial with a curved periphery. The new set of real-life images, courtesy of Android Central, features a screen that is dramatically curved and mimics the aesthetics of the “waterfall” curved screen that smartphone makers like Vivo pursued a few years ago.
But given the huge curvature of the glass, Google can simply use the curved edges for flashing notification lights without interrupting the screen content. Accordingly, another leaked image, which appeared last week, revealed the home screen of the Pixel Watch with a clearly visible integration of Fitbit (which Google owns).
The images leaked in Android Central seem to show the long-standing rumor Pixel Watch.
It seems that the body is metal with a glossy finish, and the sensor array is neatly arranged in a rectangular strip in the center. The rotating crown also has a metal coating. It is said that there are two physical buttons on the main body of the Pixel Watch – one on each side of the crown. It is not clear whether these buttons are for user interface interaction or for health-related functions.
The Pixel Watch in question was apparently devoid of functional software, as pressing the buttons reportedly only flashed the boot screen with the “G” logo. The device, which could be a “testing model for Pixel’s internal team,” also relies on its own strap-on connection points, just like the Apple Watch. This means that buyers will not be able to simply buy a standard 22mm Pixel Watch strap to suit their style. Leaked live images show only a blue strap that looks like rubberized silicone, but there will probably be more color options.
Currently reportedly being codenamed Rohan, Google’s first smartwatch will rely on a personalized chip that shares its DNA with Samsung’s Exynos family and will also support cellular connectivity. However, there is no word on the options for the size and material of the case.
The possible side of the Pixel Watch, along with the strap, has leaked to Android Central.
The box in which the Pixel Watch was found indicates that the device is for internal testing and development only and may not be the final design of the retail package. Interestingly, however, someone (read: a Google employee or contractor) would carry the packaging box in public while secretly testing a long-awaited product.
Rumor has it that the Pixel Watch will offer a supercharged version of Google Assistant, which means faster response times and some exclusive features, just like Pixel smartphones. It remains to be seen whether it will combine advanced health-related functions, such as an electrocardiogram and measuring the level of oxygen saturation in the blood.
Google has not yet said a word about the Pixel Watch, but rumors suggest it may debut at the upcoming I / O event in May with the Pixel 6a. However, if Google decides to release it along with the Pixel 7 series phones, we may have to wait until the fourth quarter of 2022 to find out what Google has to offer with its first smartwatch.
Until then, watch this leak with skeptical (albeit curious) lenses.
